You begin your Alaskan journey in Anchorage. Your journey heads south to the lush Kenai Peninsula, a vacation spot for native Alaskans. Visit the ice blue Portage Glacier Lake before heading to the fishing capital of the state, Kenai, Seward. Embark on a full day cruise to the Kenai Fjords National Park and see the stunning sights such as calving glaciers, sea bird colonies and perhaps even a pod of orcas hunting for salmon. Next, board the Whittier to Valdez ferry across Prince William Sound. While on the ferry, pass the massive Columbia Glacier.
Next, a visit to America’s largest National Park, Wrangell-St. Elias. Spend two nights at the bush town of McCarthy with plenty of time to explore the abandoned copper mining town or Kennicott. Here you have the opportunity to hike the Kennicott and Root glaciers, try ice climbing or take a scenic flight along the mountains, glaciers and rugged wilderness.
Kluane National Park is your next stop where you will camp along the shores of Lake Kluane. You can hike up Sheep Mountain or relax by Lake Kluane before you journey on to Whitehorse, the old frontier capital. While in Whitehorse you will have an opportunity to go horseback riding at Sky High Ranch. Continue on the trail of the original Sourdough miners along the Yukon River to the town of Dawson, created during the gold rush era. Camp along the banks of the Yukon River and pan for gold or try your hand at gambling at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s Saloon.
From Dawson, head further north along the Dempster Highway into Canada’s Northwest Territories and across the Artic Circle to Inuvik, the northern most town in Canada! This far north, experience the remote and sparse lifestyle of the Dene, Metis and Inuvialuit peoples who call this place home. You can take an optional flight to Tuktoyaktuk on the coast of the Artic Ocean to gain a unique insight into this community and their livelihood.
Return south along the “Top of the World Highway” that returns you to the USA and Alaska. Finish your journey with “The Great One”, Denali National Park. Denali is the home to Mt McKinley, spectacular views, wildlife and amazing hikes, this unspoilt wilderness is a great end to your Alaskan journey. Return to Anchorage as your adventure comes to an end.
