Amazon Turtle Conservation Volunteer
An amazing and authentic hands-on rainforest experience.
Turtle meat and eggs have been the basic diet of Amazon and Orinoco indigenous people. Population growth and colonisation of rainforest areas means that turtles are at unsustainable levels.
Working on this voluntary work in Peru based in a rainforest national reserve deep in the Amazon, volunteers will patrol local beaches along the river to locate nests, collect eggs, construct artificial breeding beaches, incubate eggs, record data on hatchings and free them back into the wild.
Voluntary WorkYou will participate in our turtle-conservation project alongside our staff and local community members in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, located several days boat-ride from Iquitos deep in Peru's northern rainforest. Typical activities include:
- Patrolling beaches up and down the river to locate turtle nests
- Carefully collect the turtle eggs
- Constructing artificial breeding beaches
- Incubating turtle eggs in the artificial beaches
- Recording scientific data on egg collection, hatching rates and characteristics of the hatchlings.
- Mark and free the hatchlings back into the wild.
- Environmental education for the young members of the local communities to safe-guard the future of the river turtles
Accommodation and MealsYou project is deep in the forest. The only possible accommodation is camping. It's fun, exciting and a great way to experience life in the rainforest. Your bed will be a cushioned bedroll in multi-person shared tents. All equipment is supplied. Volunteers need to bear in mind that this project is based deep in the jungle. There are few home comforts and access to shops will be very limited.
All your meals are included. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be prepared in the field based on foods they can get in the local areas. This could include fish, chicken, fresh fruit and vegetables, rice, corn and eggs.
