How was your experience in the destination(s) that you travelled to with Gap Year for Grown Ups?
Amazing, humbling, unbelievable, the best thing I have done in my life (I am 60 next month and I have had an interesting life!)
What did you think of the programme? I thought it was very well constructed. I had the chance to have “a go” at all the different projects. I tried everything except the teaching. |
I can now say to people I have slashed and raked grass and weeds, plastered walls, taken water from wells, painted walls, watched babies being born and weighed them by the hundred! I have also sung, danced and played with orphans to the extent that I never want to hear “the Hokey Cokey” ever again!
What was the most memorable moment of your trip? That is really difficult as I have such wonderful memories. Seeing a baby being born and having him named after my husband, Peter. Being cuddled by the children,(they called me grandmother!) Meeting so many lovely Zambians. Walking with Lions in Zimbabwe and riding an African Elephant. Seeing Victoria Falls and having High Tea on Livingstone I- I had my feet washed by a lovely young man! The Zambezi sunset.could probably go on forever! |

The Zambezi sunset.could probably go on forever! I think the most poignant memory I have is waving every day to the children who used to come out on the streets every time they heard otruck coming.
On the last day it was very emotional, as I felt as if I was waving goodbye to Zambia. It took about three months, after I cameback, before I could talk about it all to people without crying! |
Last but not least, my fellow volunteers, who were all much younger than me and almost without exception, good fun and put up with me! Especially my room mate Hayley, who is blind. How brave is that?
What was the accommodation like?
Better than I was anticipating! The beds were comfortable, the food was reasonable.
Were you pleased you went with Gap Year for Grown Ups? Yes, definitely. |
