The Atlantic Ocean is the world's second largest ocean to the Pacific and covers approximately one-fifth of the Earth's surface.
The ocean has irregular coasts indented by numerous bays, gulf and seas including: the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, North Sea, Labrador Sea and the Baltic Sea.
In addition to this the Atlantic is dotted with many islands including: the Faroe Islands, Svalbard, Greenland, Iceland, Rockall, Great Britain, Ireland, Fernando de Noronha, the Azores, Maderia, the Canaries, the Cape Verde, the West Indies, St. Helena and the Falklands.
In the Atlantic tropical cyclones develop off the coast of Africa near Cape Verse and then move westward into the Caribbean Sea causing destruction to many of the islands in the Caribbean as well as the coastlines of Central America and Florida.
Part of the Atlantic is covered in ice in the Labrador Sea, Denmark Strait and coastal portions of the Baltic Sea. It is these shelves of ice melting that is causing concern for global warming. The currents in the Atlantic are strong and affect many climatic changes in the world.
Furthermore, there is an active constructive plate boundary on the bed of the Atlantic. This is where the tectonic plates are forced apart and molten rock (magma) rises from the mantle to fill the gap between the two plates. This forms a mid-ocean ridge. In the Atlantic the North American plate is moving away from the Eurasian plate.
