Project Orientation
Upon arrival at the office in Sydney, you will meet your team leader and your fellow volunteers. Before making your way to the project site you will be given a comprehensive induction and orientation introducing you to the project and organisation, your role as a volunteer, the activities you will be getting involved with and a thorough health and safety briefing.
Accommodation and Meals
Your first six nights will be in shared bunkhouse style accommodation. Whilst in Narooma you will stay in backpacker hostel in twin or single room accommodation. On Montague Island your accommodation will be in the island’s restored and beautifully appointed heritage guesthouse, which is the original lighthouse keeper’s quarters. Accommodation is in twin share rooms (single rooms are available for an additional supplement.) Other facilities include a lounge/reading room, television room, kitchen and dining area. Linen and bath towels are provided.
Free Time
On Montague Island, while you are not working there will be a number of individual and group activities offered to you including:

Exploratory walks to varied parts of the island's landscape.
- Historical interpretation walks to features such as the cemetery, the quarry and the old jetty area.
- Self-guided tours of the historic light station precincts.
- Guided tour of the lighthouse museum and operating lighthouse.
- Interpreted viewing of the wildlife as it goes about its daily living.
- Time and space to enjoy the island and do you own thing such as photography, reading, relaxing, walking, jogging etc.
Project Support
Throughout your stay you will have the support of our local Australian team leaders. While on Montague Island volunteers will be fully escorted by a professional National Parks and Wildlife Service Guide, as you will be directly supporting the research and restoration projects taking place. You will be able to ask for help and advice from these people throughout your stay. They are trained in safe management of projects and are experts in practical conservation. You will have an initial health and safety briefing, and you will be given safety tips and shown how to use equipment throughout your project work. In addition you will have access to a 24-hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff should you need to.
Project Age Limit
The volunteers on this programme may be of a broad age range. There is no upper age limit.
Project Support
Throughout your stay you will have the support and guidance of your local project coordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay. In addition you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
