Australia Island Conservation

Trip code: OZIC
Environmental conservation in Australia

You will get to see a large variety of wildlife whilst you are working on this project. Working on the mainland you will spot wallabies, wombats, kangaroos, possums, lizards and a variety of birds.

Typical Itinerary

Day 1 (Friday)
On Friday morning the group will meet at the office in Sydney where you will have an induction and orientation. You will then leave Sydney by bus for the southbound journey to Canberra, the project location for the next few days. You will have the evening to spend at your leisure. (D)

Day 2 (Saturday)
Today you will be either undertaking conservation work, enjoying a local bushwalk at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve or spend time enjoying Australia’s capital city – Canberra. (BLD)

Day 3 (Sunday)
Today will be spent either undertaking conservation work, or you will have the day to spend as you wish in Canberra and the surrounding area. (BLD)

Day 4 – 6 (Monday – Wednesday)
For the next three days you will be undertaking conservation activities in and around Canberra, which will involve habitat restoration to assist the native restoration of important local habitats. (BLD)

Day 7 (Thursday)
Today you will leave for Narooma by coach, arriving at about midday. This will leave you plenty of time to explore the local area; you could take a walk along the beautiful beach or explore the quaint seaside town. (B)

Day 8 (Friday)
On Friday morning you will travel by boat (approx. ½ an hour) to Montague Island. Remember to look out for the seal colony as the island is home to the largest Australian and New Zealand fur seal haul, with more than a thousand crowding the rocks on the northern side in winter and spring. (BLD)

The main aim for this part of the programme is to have a relaxing, fun and educational experience, with an opportunity to explore the island and lighthouse, enjoy an after-dark museum and lighthouse visit, and learn about the environmental, historical and cultural significance of this stunning nature reserve. Located off the South Coast of NSW, Montague Island was first operated as a lighthouse in the late 1800's and has been unavailable to the general public for overnight stays for over 130 years, so staying overnight on the Island is an exclusive and special experience.

Day 9 (Saturday)
Montague Island activities as above. (BLD)

Day 10 (Sunday)
You will spend the morning working on volunteer activities on the Island before transferring back to Narooma in the afternoon. There will be free time to spend as you wish. (BL)

Day 11 (Monday)
Transfer back to Sydney by coach. (B)
