After meeting your team leader at the office in Sydney you will be taken to the Wollongong region where your volunteer experience begins.

Voluntary Work

You will spend four days here working on a coastal wetland rehabilitation project undertaking activities such as seed collection, tree planting and weed removal. After having a day free to explore the area you will spend the next five days doing land care conservation activities at the bush camp or a nearby site.

At the end of this section of the programme you will travel by boat over to Montague Island where you will spend Friday and Saturday exploring the island and learning about its environmental, historical and cultural significance, and of course spend time relaxing and having fun!

Location

Starting in Sydney, you will travel south to the Wollongong region for the first part of the programme and then travel by boat to Montague Island, off the South Coast of New South Wales, Australia.

Accommodation and Meals

Your first six nights accommodation will be at Chakola bush camp, named after the local aboriginal word for Lyrebird – which can be spotted on site. It is a covenanted nature reserve with a range of wildlife to spot and spectacular views and bush walks to enjoy. Accommodation is in single, twin and quad share cabins, with a large communal room with a wood burning stove and a commercial-style kitchen.

While on Montague Island your accommodation will be in the island’s restored and beautifully appointed heritage guesthouse, which is the original lighthouse keeper’s quarters. Accommodation is in twin or quad share rooms (single and double rooms are available for an additional supplement.) Other facilities include a lounge/reading room, television room, kitchen and dining area. Linen and bath towels are provided.
