Volunteer Activities
The project is based at the largest koala sanctuary in the world, which is a 30-minute bus ride from Brisbane. The sanctuary, which was the first of its kind, was established in 1927 with two koalas. Now more than 80 years old, it is home to 130 koalas!
You will spend the majority of your time feeding the animals and cleaning their enclosures, although there will be opportunities to get involved in other activities. Please be aware it is a physical, hands-on project.
Your tasks will be organised so that you experience working in different areas of the sanctuary. The sanctuary is divided into bird, mammal, reptile, macropod and koala sections, and a hospital. Each day, you will work with a keeper in their section and will be given a list of activities for that day.
Your tasks will include:
- Preparing and collecting food for the animals
- Helping with the cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures
- Taking part in behavioural enrichment programmes
- Providing general assistance to the keepers
