Why can’t I get paid work if I’m over 30? Unfortunately due to the restrictions on the Australia Working Visa, no one over the age of 30 is able to apply for one and therefore work in Oz.
What are the differences between Option A and Option B? The Option A is for those people who are looking to get paid work after they have completed the programme and Option B is for people who are not eligible for a working visa or do not wish to take the training further.
Option A includes a 4 day stay in Brisbane (option B has 2 days in Brisbane) as well as a certain amount of help with finding a job and assistance with paper work/ bank accounts etc. Option B has a choice of accommodation that Option A does not.
What exactly is a Jack/Jillaroo? A Jackaroo or Jillaroo is the name given to a male or female trainee stockman on a station (sheep or cattle). A stockman is the name given to the person who looks after livestock on the sheep or cattle station.
If I choose Option B and then decide I do want the paid work option, can I switch? You cannot take part in Option A of this project unless you have a working holiday visa. If you are over 30 you are not eligible for a visa anyway, and you are unable to apply for a working holiday visa if you are already in Australia.
I’ve never ridden a horse before, does that matter? It doesn’t matter too much, but a bit of experience on horseback would be advantageous.
The following questions only apply to Option A:
Is there a minimum amount of time I have to stay at each placement? The jobs that you will be taking are placements on real working farms. There is not normally a minimum length placement (though this can vary depending on the placement), but most employers like you to commit for at least a month. The location of some placements may mean that your employer may have to drive for a few hours to collect you and will then spend time showing you ‘the ropes’ and helping you get settled in. In this respect, a month is a good amount of time for you to get really stuck into the place and earning some money. The maximum placement time is 6 months.
Whereabouts will I be working/placed? We work with over 300 employers spread all over Australia, so it is up to you where you work. However, this will depend on where the jobs are available at the time that you are looking for work and the placements that are available/suitable for your skills. The programme is really flexible so all you need to do is keep in touch with our team out in Australia to let them know where you are and when you’re looking for work.
Can I be placed with a friend? You can be placed with a friend, but we cannot guarantee that you will have a job offer by the 9th day if you decide to apply together.
What are the placements like? All placements vary but the majority will be in an outback/semi outback location. Often placements can be a few hours drive from the nearest town/shops so you will need to be prepared to be out in a properly rural area of Australia! Due to the nature and location of placements, it’s normally a great way to not only earn money, but to save it as well. You’ll be seeing a completely different side to Australia and will have a fantastic experience.
Will I have the opportunity to travel as well? This programme is purposefully flexible so that you do have the opportunity to travel as well. Your working holiday visa lasts for one year, and throughout that year you will also have job offers when you want to. So, if you work for a couple of months and then decide to travel, you can get another placement after you have travelled if you wish. You could even move around Australia working at different placements as you go if you wanted!
