Australia

Everyone knows Australia for its laid back, Barbie loving, beach going natives, and they do not disappoint! Thanks to the lovely weather and glorious beaches, outback, mountains and all the other natural features Oz has to offer, the Australians enjoy the big outdoors, so really, it is best to join them!

Our project is located at Townsville in North Queensland, which boasts about 320 or more days of pure sunshine every year! Townsville is also the entry point for the Great Barrier Reef, Historical Charters Towers and the tropics of the Great Green Way. It is also the gateway to the outback, so the free time you have available can as be rich and rewarding as your time spent at the wildlife park.

Weather
The project is based in tropical Queensland and some parts of the coast can experience extremely hot and humid.  Queensland’s summers rarely exceed 30 degree in the day, and at night reduce to around 19 to 20 degrees. In the winter, the temperature during the day is 22 degrees in most parts of Australia.

If you are visiting Australia in warmer time of year you can still experience diverse wealth conditions, so come equipped prepared for cold spells and wet weather.

Free time
You have spare time in the evenings and get two days in a row off every week.   Project hours start at 7 or 9am and finish at around 3 or 5pm.  Then you have the evening free to chill out or just do some serious socialising in the pubs or restaurants in Townsville.  Here are some of the things you can do on your free days:

At Townsville:

  • Museum of Tropical Queensland
  • The Strand Beach Promenade
  • Reef HQ Aquarium
  • Charters Towers
  • Great Barrier Reef
  • Castle Hill
  • Art Galleries
  • Shopping
  • Theatres
  • Indigenous Cultural Centre
  • Town Common and bird watching
  • Lots of pubs and restaurants, clubs and bars!

Trips out from Townsville:

  • Visit Magnetic Island, off the coast of Townsville.  Two nights are included as part of the programme (and the programme price) at one of the island’s hostels.   You can get a ferry to Magnetic Island for around $26 return and spend the days diving, snorkelling, jet skiing, horse riding, fishing, bush walking, kayaking, or relaxing at one of the twenty-three bays and beaches on the islands. (You will need arrange the accommodation on Magnetic Island once you are on the programme – this aspect depends on accommodation availability).
  • Reef and Diving trips.

Please note: Costs for any non-planned itinerary activities are not covered in programme fee.

Getting To the Project
You should aim to be in Townsville on the morning of your project start date.  Flights can be arranged from Perth, Melbourne, Cairns, Sydney and Brisbane to Townsville every day.

Once at Townsville, a member of staff will collect you from the train station/bus terminal or airport.  They will give you a small tour of Townsville before taking you to your accommodation.

Next morning (Tuesday) a member of staff will pick you up from your accommodation at about 6:30am to start at the sanctuary for 7am.
