Project Orientation
On Tuesday you will have an orientation day and tour of the park. Topics covered will include:
- An introduction to the park staff and a tour of the park
- Health and safety briefing (including areas that are off limits etc)
- Workplace ethics
- An information sheet on animals and birds that you will be involved with will be provided
- Explanation of Key and Locking policy
- An introduction to the area
- Meals and accommodation
- Transportation and free time
This will also be a great opportunity to ask any questions you have about your time at the park so that you feel comfortable in your new surroundings.
We require a minimum stay of 4 weeks so that you can really see the difference all your hard work is having!
Accommodation and Meals
Whilst you are volunteering, accommodation will be in a large guesthouse on a hill overlooking the city. Accommodation is based on 3 persons sharing in a dormitory style room. Facilities include a kitchen, lounge and laundry.
During your time volunteering you will be provided with morning tea and lunch at the park. As breakfast and dinner is not included in the programme cost, you will be free to try out the local restaurants or shop at the local supermarket and cook together with the other volunteers.
Free Time
You will have some free time everyday while you are not volunteering at the park and have 2 days off in a row each week. Working hours will start at 7am or 9am and finish at either 3pm or 5pm so the evenings will be your own to go out for a meal or sample the pubs that Townsville has to offer. Here are a few ideas of things you can do on your days off:
In Townsville:
- Great Barrier Reef
- Charters Towers
- Reef HQ Aquarium
- The Strand Beach Promenade
- Museum of Tropical Queensland
- Art Galleries
- Castle Hill
- Theatres
- Town Common and bird watching
- Shopping
- Indigenous Cultural Centre
- Lots of restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs!
Trips from Townsville:
- Magnetic Island, just off the coast of Townsville. You will have 2 nights at a hostel on the island included in the programme price. Catch a ferry over to Magnetic Island on your day off (about $26 return ticket) where you can spend your days snorkelling, diving, horse riding, jet skiing, kayaking, bush walking, fishing or relaxing on one of the islands 23 bays and beaches. (Please arrange your accommodation on Magnetic Island once on the programme – accommodation is dependent on availability).

If you do choose to participate in any activities during your free time, all costs associated with that activity (e.g. transport, tickets, accommodation etc) are your own responsibility
