The History of the Sanctuary The wildlife sanctuary opened in the 1980’s and each year it welcomes tens of thousands of visitors through it’s gates. It comprises of a 35-acre area, which is enclosed by a feral-proof fence. This was designed in order to keep predators out, allow habitat re-growth and encourage the numbers of birds and mammals to flourish. Many of the species found here are endangered so the sanctuary proves a safe haven where they can roams free.
Some of the Sanctuary Goals Include:
- Continue developing the sanctuary in a way that allows it to become both an iconic tourist destination as well as sustainable ecosystem allowing the overall goals to be reached
- Allow participants to see the effects of their hard work by involving them with habitat restoration projects form start to finish
- Continue with the development and practice of essential research projects relating to native flora, platypus, bandicoots and bettongs in particular
- Keeping accurate records of the numbers of reintroduced mammals. This will be done through nighttime censuses
- Familiarise participants with several key species involved captive breeding.
- Research the effects that foraging has on the health of soils, flora and overall populations
- Calculating the sanctuary’s carrying capacity (working out numbers of each species that can be supported)
