Borneo Camp Life Experience

You will be located in Ulu Moyog area in the foothills of the Crocker Range National Park, about 30 minutes from Sabah’s capital - Kota Kinabalu. Whilst the village is not on the poverty line, it predominantly relies on subsistence farming and on a small local rubber plantation.

Project Orientation

Your orientation is one of the most important elements of your Borneo Life experience. Emphasis is based on clear and practical information to make your experience as fulfilling and enjoyable as possible.

Your orientation on day 1 includes:

  • Introduction to the staff and the camp
  • A session of detailed cultural background
  • Local orientation of the area surrounding the camp
  • A briefing of the type of community project work you will undertake

Accommodation and Meals

You will be staying in a volunteer 'long house'. Bedrooms are on a twin share basis.

Members of the community will prepare meals three meals each day for you. Fresh produce and traditional styles of cooking will be used and you are welcome to watch and learn cooking techniques. Please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.

Free Time

There are many activities that you may like to the end of your programme. For those who are interested in learning to scuba dive, or who hold PADI qualifications, Tungku Abdul Rahman Marine Park is a stunning place to visit. Located just 15 minutes by boat from Kota Kinabalu, the park consists of 7 islands with waters teeming with marine life. You can book a PADI open water dive course upon booking for an additional £280 - please enquire with the Gap Year for Grown Ups office for further details.

Mount Kinabalu, the highest peak in Southeast Asia standing at 4096m, is a fantastic challenge for any visit to Borneo. The climb begins with a 6 hour trek to base camp, arriving before sunset for incredible views. The climb to the summit begins in the very early hours, setting off before dawn breaks in order to reach the top before sunrise. This trek can be arranged at the time of booking for an additional £225, please enquire with the Gap Year for Grown Ups office for further details.

Other options include jungle trekking for up to a week into the depths of the Borneo jungle, learning survival skills and finding out all about folklore legends of the area, and white water rafting trips.
