Borneo Pygmy Elephant and Orangutan Conservation Tour
This is an essential project helping to conserve the highly endangered Pygmy Elephant. Whilst helping out on this programme, you will enjoy an excellent safari-style experience and stay at a very comfortable eco-friendly lodge.
Volunteer RoleYou will help to monitor the pygmy elephants movement patterns along the river; investigate elephant/human conflicts and elephant behaviour near to local villages; and make locals aware of the fact that the pygmy elephant is an important tourist attraction and part of their region’s natural heritage.
If you join the Pygmy Elephant Conservation project you will make a significant contribution to the preservation efforts of keeping this species alive by doing the following tasks:
- Collecting crucial data on the migration patterns of Pygmy elephants (Elephas maximus borneensis)
- Come into close proximity with Pygmy elephants and see proboscis monkeys, wild orang-utans, hornbills and other enthralling birds and animals found almost entirely in Borneo.
- Visit an orangutan haven and observe their feeding periods.
- Take a trip to Kinabalu National Park at the bottom of the highest mountain summit in South East Asia, Mount Kinabalu.
- Help with talks on issues related to pygmy elephant conservation.
- Enjoy the experience of a river safari, learn survival skills for the jungle
- Offset the CO2 travel emissions you created by helping with a tree planting program as part of a local forest renewal programme
- Help to encourage local eco-tourism and generate the local economy
LocationThe project is located on the Lower Kinabatangan, at Sabah, Borneo.
Accommodation and mealsFor the first night you will stay in dorm-style hostel accommodation in Kota Kinabalu. For the last two nights of the project you will stay in similar accommodation based in Sandakan.. During the volunteer placement, your accommodation facilities will be at a peaceful and serene eco-lodge, situated along the river of Lower Kinabatangan, Sabah. Your meals at the co-lodge will be buffet style, normally delicious Malay cuisine.
