The Brandberg Mountain is the highest in Namibia, its tallest peak measuring 8550 ft. There are thousands of rock art paintings and engravings in the mountain's caves and ravines, including the famous 'White Lady' painting, which caused great controversy in the early 20th Century, as scientists claimed that the style, though thousands of years old, originated from Europe. Nevertheless, the lady is in fact a male witchdoctor, depicted by a local tribe some 20,000 years ago.
The mountain stands within the Brandberg Nature Reserve, which supports high altitude species such as the Hartmann's mountain zebra, klipspringers and chacma baboons, as well as birds like Ruppell's parrot and the rosy-faced lovebird.
Weird looking plants grow on the slopes of Brandberg, including aloes and emphorias that help give the country its nickname `Planet Namibia' due to its unearthly landscapes.
The mountain is a spectacular red/pink colour, and during sunrise and sunset it glows a deep blood red, which not only gives it its name `burnt mountain', but also made it a place of special significance for the local tribes people, who treat the mountain as a spiritual site.
