Brazil Beginners Rock Climbing
Rio de Janeiro The city of Rio de Janeiro sits overlooking a bay in one of the most spectacular city locations you could come across. The ‘Marvellous City’ is somewhat crammed between the rather lovely city beaches, such as Copacabana (though unfortunately Barry Manilow is not a permanent feature) and Ipanema and the forest covered mountains that make up the city’s backdrop. Whereas the regular tourist will head to Rio to experience ‘a vida doce’ (think la dolce vita!) there is deep in-equality throughout the city. Head up to the top of Sugarloaf or Corcovado Mountains, try some samba, head to the beaches (obviously!) and enjoy a few of Rio’s colonial gems.
The state of Rio, surrounding the city, is fringed with miles and miles of unspoilt and relatively deserted beaches. Compared to the city, the state is calm, beautiful and accessible. Although sticking to the coast does have its advantages, heading inland will bring you to places such as the city of Pertopolis, a 19th century retreat set in the hills that used to be frequented by Rio’s (the city) ultra-rich.
Climate The climate of the Rio area is most certainly tropical, meaning hot temperatures virtually year round. May to August has the advantage of lovely cooling trade winds off the Atlantic, which keeps the temperatures between 22 ºC and 32ºC. December to March is known as the rainy season, although rain is a pretty regular occurrence all year round. Its at this time that the humidity can go right up and temperatures can even reach as much as 40ºC!!
Project Support Your project support in Rio will be supplied by the project team, who are always there to answer any questions or give you any advise that you may need throughout your time in Rio.
Project Orientation Your project orientation will occur on your first full day after your arrival into Rio. It will cover things such as the Brazilian culture, safety issues (in terms of both the project and the city), things to see and do, all about the project and so on. This is the best time to ask any questions, so have them ready!
Free Time This project is pretty involved, with lessons everyday, but the time before and after your lessons is time that you can spend as you please. Rio has a lot of great stuff to do, so you can relax/be active on the beaches, wander the city, go up Sugarloaf Mountain or up to see the statue of Christ and so on. Rio is one place that you will never get bored!
Getting There Flights into Rio’s International airport.
