Project Age Limit
Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health

Project Requirements
You will need plenty of enthusiasm, and a general interest in helping and caring for children. You also need a high beginner level of Portuguese.

Portuguese will be the main language used while on the project, as many of the staff cannot speak English. For those who are new to the language or those who simply wish to brush up on their skills, we recommend that you take part in our language school prior to the start of your project.

Programme Information
The work takes place at the Educational and Communal centre, set up by the project, where the children are assisted in both their educational and personal development. The project aims to improve their quality of life, build their confidence and self-esteem and teach them social and ethical values for the future.

In the longer term, the centre is committed to tackling the factors that contribute to economic, educational and social problems in Recife, including poor education and school attendance. In this respect, the project aims to help disadvantaged people by helping them to develop professionally and personally and by providing educational initiatives and raising awareness about health issues.

Project Orientation
When you arrive in Recife, you will be met at the airport and will have an orientation with the onsite staff covering all you need to know about the project itself, such as what you will be doing and health and safety. You can also expect a country and area orientation, which will cover areas such as:

  • The Brazilian Culture
  • Money and Getting Around
  • An Introduction to Recife
  • What to do in your free time
  • Local food and places to eat

Accommodation and Meals
You will stay in a hostel near the centre of Recife, which is located 2 blocks from Boa Viagem beach and close to supermarkets, restaurants, bars and clubs. Hostel rooms sleep between 4 and 6 people and you will share bathroom and kitchen facilities. The hostel has a TV room and storage lockers for you to keep your belongings in and the project is easily accessible by bus.

Breakfast is included and is provided at the hostel. All other meals will be self- catered. Most volunteers join forces and use the hostel kitchen to cook meals for one another. Not only is this a cost effective way of eating, it is also a great way to get to know your fellow volunteers.

Project Support
Throughout your time in Recife you will receive the support and guidance of a team of project co-ordinators based in the town. They will provide you with competent assistance and help you with any questions or advice you may need during your stay.

The project staff will be on hand throughout the day to ensure your comfort and safety. In addition, we will provide you with a 24 hour emergency contact number before you depart, so that you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
