Location
The city of Rio de Janeiro (translates as River of January) is a world famous city of culture (particularly samba music/dance and carnival), style and the good life! Nicknamed by its residents the ‘Cidade Marvilhosa’ or the Marvellous City to you and me, it is Brazil’s second city in terms of size (after Sao Paulo) and status (after the capital Brasilia). A former capital of the South American Portuguese Empire between 1808 and 1821, the greater metropolitan area of the city is home to around 12 million people…nearly twice the population of London!

Rio has several world famous landmarks and features. The statue of Christ the Redeemer, standing atop Corcovado has recently been voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, Sugarloaf Mountain with its cable car offers fantastic views over the Guanabara Bay, including the popular, lively city beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. Ipanema particularly is thought to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the world with the “Dois Irmãos” (Two Brothers) at its Western end.

Climate
Rio enjoys a tropical climate, so the weather is generally pretty hot all year round. Between May and August the high temperatures are cooled by the trade winds blowing off the Atlantic, bringing temperatures down to a respectably hot 22°C to 32°C. December to March is the rainy season (though rain does occur all year round), and at this time of year temperatures can soar up to around 40°C and it gets really humid.

Project Support
The language school coordinators will always be around to assist you throughout your time in Rio. If you have any questions, need some advice or any information on anything to do with Rio or the Language School, from where to find cheapest Internet to your classes, they will be more than happy to help you out.

There is also the 24hr contact number that will allow you to get in contact with a member of the UK staff, in case of emergency.

Project Orientation
Your language school orientation will take place on your first morning at the language school. You’ll meet the teachers and your fellow students and hear all about what is in store for you whilst you are ‘studying’ the Portuguese Language.

Free Time
Other than your four hours a day at the language school and the 2 or 3 organised language school activities that you’ll be involved in, the rest of your time in Rio can be spent as you wish. There is a lot of stuff to see and do, whether it is heading up mountains to admire the views or flopping down on the beach to enjoy the sun and the surf! Rio also has a fantastic nightlife that is definitely worth making the most of.

Getting There
Flights into Rio’s International airport, where you will be meet and transferred into the city by the project staff.
