Voluntary Work
Cambodia is still dealing with the after effects of the civil war and the years of genocide. People have been left with deep psychological and physical scars: many people’s relatives, including children’s parents, were killed and others suffered crippling injuries as a result of landmines and other wartime atrocities.
The centre in Khan Dang Kor was established to give orphaned children a safe place to live, eat and study. It caters for seven- to 18-year-olds and offers a mixture of academic lessons and leisure activities, such as sport and drama. These will all help the children in the future. Some of the children may also have the chance to attend a public school for half a day, which will help consolidate what they learn from you at the centre.
Teaching will be the main focus of your role – helping them with their English and maths, for example, will give them a better chance of escaping poverty. You might also get involved with performing arts, language lessons, art classes and sports. In addition, you will act as a role model to the children, inspiring them to aim for higher education and helping them gain the skills that will make them employable.
As a volunteer your activities may include:
- Arrange lesson plans
