Your programme will be run by expert guides and instructors who will train you to become an expert winter traveller. Their enthusiasm and passion for the Canadian wilderness all play a great part to ensure that you have an unforgettable experience. The programme allows you to build your strength and confidence in yourself as you take on challenges and learn technical skills in the great outdoors of the wilderness.
There are 5 stages involved in your programme: Dog Sled Supported Snowshoe Expedition; Wilderness First Aid Certification Course; Ice Rescue and Cold Water Immersion Course; Solo Quest; and Solo Dog Sledding Expedition. At the start of your programme, you will receive a full orientation.
Dog Sled Supported Snowshoe Expedition
Exploring the numerous trails of Algonquin Park, you will be taught dog handling, dog harnessing, how to pack your sled and how to hook the dogs to the sled. Additionally, you will learn commands and essential skills for living and travelling in a winter environment. You will be staying in canvas prospector tents, heated by wood stoves.
Wilderness First Aid Certification Course
You will travel back to the base camp where you will be given an intense introduction to wilderness survival skills. For this part and the next two stages of the programme, you will stay at the base camp lodges.
Ice Rescue and Cold Water Immersion Course
This course will teach you the skills required for safe travel on ice; an essential part of winter travel. You will learn the structures of ice and how to take ice samples, as well as basic rescue skills and hypothermia assessment and treatment.
Solo Quest
The wilderness awaits you as you embark on your quest and put your new survival skills to practice. Your time will be spent in the delightful company of an Aboriginal elder who will fascinate you with traditional teachings about the land and life. During this stage, you have the option to spend one night alone in the wild to experience the true wilderness. Staff sessions are also available to discuss what you have learned and how you can utilise this knowledge in everyday life.
Solo Dog Sledding Expedition
A perfect opportunity for you to develop the skills that you have learned. You will be able to travel solo on your sled through Algonquin Park and even experience night mushing.
During your dog sledding portion of the programme specialist winter clothing and equipment will be provided for you. You will receive a full list of gear to bring, prior to your departure.
