Cape Town Cape Town is an extremely popular tourist destination and one of South Africa’s best-developed cities. Part of the draw has got to be its spectacular location – the city itself is located at the base of the Cape Peninsula that curves round to form a natural harbour and its position between the looming Table Mountain and Signal Hill forms a natural bowl that the city nestles in. Cape Town is a cosmopolitan, dynamic and beautiful city, with plenty to keep the average tourist entertained.
Visit the lively Victoria and Alfred Waterfront for good food and shopping or for something a little more sinister head out to Robben Island and visit the prison where Nelson Mandela was held. For a more relaxed approach to exploring Cape Town’s surroundings, you’ll have to do for the Garden Route and head for the world-renowned vineyards to sample the wares!
Free Time Weekends are free for you to spend as you wish. You might choose to wander Cape Town, exploring at your own pace and soaking up the atmosphere and sights from one of the numerous bars or cafes. Alternatively, hire a car and travel further a field to Cape of Good Hope or to Boulders Bay to see the local penguin population.
There are also numerous travel agents offering a multitude of tours such as those to Orange River and Fish River Canyon, or travel a little further into Namibia or up to Victoria Falls! For longer tours after your project please contact the Africa team at Gap Year For Grown Ups who can assist you in organising safe yet adventurous trips incorporating up to eight African countries!
Getting There You are required to arrive into Cape Town International airport for the start date of your project. Our project representative will meet you upon arrival and take you to your accommodation.
