Career break safety - Be careful with your possessions

A good piece of basic career break safety advice is that you should avoid flaunting money or any expensive looking items such as camcorders as much as possible. Don't make yourself a prime target for would-be thieves! Another similar piece of career break safety advice is to always keep a close eye on your possessions, particularly in crowded areas such as markets where you might get distracted.

Never leave your baggage unattended, even for a minute, or with someone you don't know or trust - and ideally lock it up with a padlock. Keep copies of all your important documents in a separate place from the originals.

Another basic piece of career break advice is to always be aware of your surroundings and trust your instincts - just as you would at home. If a situation somehow doesn't feel ‘right' just walk away.

If you are walking about at night stick to well-lit main roads and avoid potential ‘no go' areas. An excellent piece of career break advice if you are arriving anywhere at night is to book your first nights accommodation in advance, thereby ensuring you don't need to start looking for a hotel in the dark.
