The cheetah is famous for being the fastest land animal, being able to achieve speeds of up to 70 miles per hour. Cheetahs are slender and long-legged - a body built for speed. They rely on a burst of speed to catch such swift prey as gazelles, wildebeest calves, impalas and smaller hoofed animals. They knock their prey to the ground and deliver a suffocating bite to the neck. Then they must eat quickly to avoid losing their kill to other carnivores.
There are only 9000-12000 left in the wild, and they are confined to parts of eastern and southwest Africa. Cheetahs are found in open and partially open savannah. Cheetahs are solitary creatures that are at risk from an increased loss of habitat, declines in prey, high cub mortality and conflict from ranchers.
