China Giant Panda Conservation

Trip code: CHGP
Panda base in China

This programme gives you the chance to help ensure a fascinating species does not disappear forever. Today experts believe there are only 1,600 Giant Pandas remaining and conservation centres like this one, in the Sichuan Province, are vital to increasing numbers. By volunteering, you will contribute to their survival and have a rare opportunity to study these beautiful animals at closer quarters.

Your Typical Itinerary

During your time at the project you will work alongside project staff who will provide competent training on how to care for the pandas. The following itinerary is an example of a typical first week.

Sunday
Arrival into Chengdu where you will be met and transferred to your accommodation. Tonight there will be a welcome dinner and briefing.

Monday
Today you will have a tour of Chengdu.

Tuesday
In the morning you will be transferred to Bifengxia by bus, which is around 150km from Chengdu and takes approximately two and a half hours (please note, this includes changing buses on the way), before enjoying your first lunch at the Panda Base. After lunch you will be given a full tour of the Base while also being introduced to your trainer and the Panda keeper. Following this there will be an explanation of the guidelines for your work. In the evening it will be time to relax as you enjoy a meal at a local restaurant with your fellow volunteers.

Wednesday-Friday
The days will begin with a morning briefing from the panda keepers followed by duties within the panda base!

Saturday-Sunday
Free time for you to spend as you wish - explore the surrounding area or visit your new furry friends at the panda base!

After your first week you will work alongside the panda keepers at the panda base Monday - Friday. Typical working hours are between 2 and 4 hours a day.
