Costa Rica Orphanages and Homes
The idea behind these “little homes” is to offer these children a family-like atmosphere instead of a large and cold environment of a government institution. The homes are privately run by volunteers and operate with donations and little government support.
Voluntary WorkVolunteers undertake many different types of work depending on the home’s needs, which can vary every day. The volunteer centre will provide you with educational materials, assistance and suggestions to help you with planning activities. Your duties could include:
- Educational activities and games
- Teaching children crafts and arts
- Organising sports and many other physical activities
- Play sessions with the children
- Help the “tías” around the home and in the kitchen
- Help the “tías” to bathe and feed the children
Suggested games and activities with the children include finger painting, making paper chains/paper hats, potato printing, hopscotch, games like Simon Says, charades and other word guessing games, baking fairy cakes or cookies! In addition the volunteers can also help out the “tías” in the running of the home and with cooking for the children.
LocationThe homes and orphanages are situated in different neighborhoods in San José, Costa Rica’s capital city. All volunteer locations are within easy access from volunteer accommodation by bus.
Accommodation and meals
Throughout your time as a volunteer you will be staying with a Costa Rican host family. These families are selected carefully to ensure comfortable, clean and safe lodgings, 2 meals a day and an excellent opportunity for you to practice your Spanish.
