Costa Rica Schools and Day Care

Trip code: CRSD
Volunteer in schools in costa rica

Volunteers can assist in educational and recreational activities in schools and day care centres throughout Costa Rica. You will assist teachers in classrooms and as well as developing basic conversational and written English with the children you will also be involved in helping with other activities such as teaching music, sports, art, crafts and IT.

Orientation

On your first day you will be taken to the volunteer centre where there will be an orientation. Here you will be provided with plenty of useful information about Costa Rica, San José and the project work, it is also a great opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. On the first day at your chosen school or day care center you will be given an orientation and further instructions before you start working.

Accommodation and Meals

You will be staying with a Costa Rican host family who will have been carefully selected to ensure that you are in clean, comfortable and safe accommodation. It will also give you a fantastic opportunity to practise your Spanish. Your host family will provide you with a private bedroom, two meals per day (breakfast and dinner) and a laundry service.

Free Time

The free time you have will depend on your agreed schedule. During your free time, volunteers are welcome to use the Internet and telephone facilities at the volunteer centre, the cafeteria, where there is free coffee and fruit juice and use of travel information and reservation desk. Some schools have organised activities and volunteers are welcome to be part of these. You will also have the chance to participate in daily Latin dance classes, cooking classes, and conversation classes. The country's capital of San José has many museums, theatres, international restaurants, discotheques and bars.

Project Support

Throughout your stay you will have the support and guidance of a volunteer work coordinator and their team. They will be able to help you with any questions or advice you may need during your time on the project.

In addition, you are able to contact our UK staff 24 hours a day should you need to, via our emergency contact number.

Project Age Limit

Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health.

Project Requirements

A basic to intermediate knowledge of Spanish is required to take part in this programme. Your working hours will be flexible but will usually range from about 15 – 30 hours per week and you can choose how often you help as well as how many hours you can dedicate.
