It is sometimes the case that people believe that they can keep exotic wild animals as pets, causing the animals immense suffering due to the poor living conditions and limited space that they are forced to live in. Costa Rican law states that keeping wild animals as pets is illegal, but unfortunately people still keep animals in captivity.

Vountary Work

The major objective of the park is, through care and rehabilitation, to reintroduce animals back into their natural habitat. Set in 23 hectares the park still has plenty of room to grow into the tropical dry forested area, as currently only 15% of the land is being used.

A centre for research has also been set up within the park, where biologists and veterinarians are able to study the behaviours and life quality of monkeys, coyotes, toucans and others.

Your involvement with this research and the type of animals that are studied depends on what animals are at the park at the time of your programme. You will work on a variety of activities on this project in various areas of the park. These activities will include:
  • Animal enclosure cleaning
  • Animal feeding
  • Assisting the park Vet
  • Constructing and maintaining trails
  • Working at the butterfly farm
  • Working in the gardens
  • General maintenance and housekeeping
  • Visitor customer service
  • Maintaining the lawn

Location

Located to the west of historic Santa Cruz near the town of Portegolpe.

Accommodation and Meals

You will be staying in a lodge that has a bedroom to sleep two or three volunteers, so please expect to be sharing. Whilst you can use the lodge kitchen to cook yourself a meal, the town of Portegolpe is only 1.5km away.

You are able to borrow a bicycle to go into town to have dinner at one of the little local restaurants. Meals here are cheap so you won’t be spending a lot of money if you choose to eat out a lot.
