Guanacaste Province
The area of Costa Rica that the Wildlife Rehab is based is Guanacaste Province. The province is in the northwest of the country, on the Pacific Coast and due to the mix of ethnic groups in the area, Guanacaste has a culture unique to Costa Rica and a distinctive dialect. The park itself is located 38km from Santa Cruz on the Nicoya Peninsula, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica due to its beautiful yet isolated beaches and great surfing.

Costa Rica
Although it accounts for a mere 0.1% of the earth’s landmass, Costa Rica is home to 5% of the overall biodiversity of the planet – what better place to volunteer on a wildlife project?

The Central American paradise is nestled between Nicaragua and Panama and boasts rainforests, volcanoes and white sand beaches. What’s more, 25% of the country is protected area, making Costa Rica the ideal destination for an intrepid traveller with a love of the natural world.

Weather
There are two climatic seasons to be taken into account on this project: the dry period - January to May - and the rainy period - May to November. The project is open all year round no matter what the weather is like!

Free Time
Your weekly day off can be decided with the staff at the park on arrival. If you plan to leave the park overnight, please let the coordinator know where you are going and when you are going to be back. In the area around the park, there are a few towns some of which are bigger than Portegolpe and therefore have more facilities.

As you are only 38km from Santa Cruz, this is a great option for a day trip. After all that hard work with the animals, you are more than welcome to spend your day off relaxing around the park. There are also other protected regions in the area that are worth a visit, such as: Palo Verde NP, Diria NP and Las Baulas Marine NP.

Getting There
Flights will need to be booked into Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose. We recommend that you organise your flights to arrive into Costa Rica the day before the project starts. You will be collected from the airport by a project rep and taken to your accommodation.
