Volunteer Role
Your role as a volunteer will be varied. You will be involved in the day-to-day care of the animals as well as assist in raising community awareness. Whilst at the centre you can expect to work closely alongside monkeys, jaguars, pumas, lions, ocelots, parrots, macaws and a variety of other South America species. We cannot guarantee exactly which animals you will work with as it depends upon inhabitants! Your duties will vary depending upon the time of year but may include some, or all of the following;
- Preparing food for the animals and birds
- Maintaining animal behaviour and bird sighting records
- Cleaning, repairing and building enclosures
- Identifying plants in the tropical forest and mangrove
- Assisting with animal healthcare
Should a rescue or release occur at the time you are volunteering, there may be opportunities to assist, and some volunteers may also be fortunate enough to get involved in the captive breeding programmes currently taking place for macaws, spider monkeys and crocodiles. Additional activities include school visits to teach the local community about the importance of preventing illegal trafficking.
