Ecuador Animal Rescue: Amazon

Trip code: ECARA
Volunteer with birds in Ecuador

This wildlife centre in the Amazon was set up in order to rescue animals that have been illegally captured, injured or abused. The centre is working to it’s limits which makes volunteers all the more valuable in helping with the day-to-day running of the centre.

I decided that I wanted to do something completely different this summer so searched on internet for volunteer work abroad. I found the Gap Year for Grown Ups web site where there was a lot of choice but decided animals, rain forest and somewhere I had not been before, South America was the place. I spent the first week in Quito the capital going to Spanish school and sightseeing in the afternoons and a few salsa lessons! One amazing day trip was a walk up Cotopaxi a volcano! I made it up to the snow line and mountain biked down! Then five days in the Galapagos islands very peaceful not many cars and wonderful wild life. Giant Tortoises, Blue footed boobies, Iguanas, Sea lions, Pelicans...Then my real adventure started, from Quito I had a six hour bus ride to Puyo then changed bus another 1 ½ hours deeper into the jungle to the Sacha Yacu rescue centre. But only cost $7.50 (£5)! Great views kept the journey interesting. There was a long climb up many steps to the centre, I had to keep stopping for breath but the views that were between the trees on the way up were fantastic! Highlights included playing with Capuchin Monkeys. The experience was great!
