Many of the children of Quito, Ecuador and their families live in extreme poverty and the support of volunteers is very appreciated. The aim of the programme is to help alleviate this poverty and teach life skills that will help the children and their families to make better future for themselves.

Volunteer Role

The programme is separated into two parts. Two mornings a week you will help with the ‘Street Children Outreach’. The ‘School Support Programme’ happens on weekday afternoons.

Street Children Outreach
The outreach programme is an important project aimed at assisting children and their families who work or live in the streets and suffer from social deprivation. Most of the parents spend all their available time selling goods in the street markets of Quito to make as much money as they can for their families, often only enough to barely survive. Consequently the children are neglected and receive little attention. Volunteers therefore are essential to this project’s success as they give the children the attention and care that they very much need.

School Support Programme
The School Support Programme will involve you travelling to Quito’s countryside suburbs and to the small community of Santa Isabel. The programme allows underprivileged children to enjoy a summer school during their vacation and provides them with English classes and help with homework during term time. The summer school volunteers help to plan activities such as painting, art, music, English and reading and writing.  You will play a very active role in these classes.

Volunteer Responsibilities include:
  • Collecting the children from their parent’s market stalls
  • Ensuring that the children wash their hands
  • Taking a daily attendance register
  • Provide support and care for the children, making sure they stay with the group
  • Plan activities in advance and make sure all project materials are available and ready
  • Take part in activities and help the children to successfully complete projects
  • Make sure all children are returned safely to their parent’s market stalls

Location

Based in Quito, Ecuador’s capital city.

Accommodation and Meals

You will stay with other volunteers in nearby house owned by a host family: it is located in a safe and convenient area. You will be sharing a room with one other volunteer, and have shared bathroom facilities. Two meals a day will be provided, usually only breakfast and dinner, as you will be out at the programmes during the day. You will have access to laundry facilities at the house.
