Volunteer Role

Your role may vary from teaching basic English to primary school children, developing language skills with secondary school pupils, offering IT training and coaching sports.

Teaching English in elementary schools
Children at this stage are just beginning to learn to speak English so your contribution will be invaluable in aiding their language development. You will work alongside a local teacher and use creative methods, such as pictures, games and stories to improve confidence and pronunciation of basic spoken English.

Teaching English in secondary schools
Secondary school pupils, age 14-18, generally hold relatively good spoken English skills making the teaching a slightly easier task. The pupils will relish the opportunity to practice their language with native English speakers. You will assist this age group by helping to improve their pronunciation and communication skills.

IT Support
With the ever-increasing developments to technology it is imperative that young people in Ethiopia are computer literate. Your help is needed to teach basic IT skills such as how to use the Internet, using spreadsheets and word processing.

Sports Coaching
Sports’ coaching is another area in which help is needed. Football is a firm favourite and you will win over the pupils if you show an interest in this discipline, but encouraging and teaching other sports will also be popular.

Please note: During school holidays and exam periods the project is still available but activities may vary and will depend upon the needs at the time.

In addition to the school placements, for one day a week you will get involved with other community initiatives. This will allow you to really experience local life and culture. Activities may include:

  • Assisting at local medical centres
  • Visiting rural schools to carry out project research
  • Organising football tournaments
  • Providing assistance to projects engaging with street children and disadvantaged families.
Please note: the community initiatives that you are involved with will vary depending on the needs at the time and may or may not include the examples listed above.

You will spend four days each week working in schools and one day per week assisting with other community initiatives. You will need to arrive into Ethiopia with a sense of creativity, independence and flexibility. Volunteers are required to use their initiative in the classroom, the children will be very eager and excited to learn.
