Fiji Dive Culture and Conservation Programme
This programme is ideal for scuba diving enthusiasts either beginner or qualified, who are looking to advance their skills and use their diving experience to make a contribution to the environment. You will learn all about Fijian culture and take time out on the many beautiful beaches that Fiji is world-famous for.
The ProgrammeThis six-week programme is divided into three main sections – Conservation, Cultural Experiences and Scuba Diving. The programme will finish with a few days chilling out on one of Fiji’s most admired beaches, so you will be having a holiday week too.
Scuba Diving Course During the first two weeks you will have scuba diving training, which will allow you to join the conservation project and take part in the diving at other points during the programme. As part of your training you will need to complete two scuba courses – either the PADI Open Water Course and the Advanced Open Water Course; or the Rescue Diver Course and Advanced Open Water Course– the option you complete depends on if you have already taken your Open Water Course.
Cultural Experience During the first two weeks (whilst you are doing your Scuba Courses), you will stay in a traditional Fijian village and gain knowledge of how these incredibly friendly people live their lives. Half of your time will be spent on the scuba courses, while the rest of your time spent with the local people in a total cultural immersion programme. This really is a memorable part of the programme and the time in which participants truly get to know the real Fiji.
Conservation Project The conservation project aims to construct an MPA (Marine Protected Area) in Savusavu Bay, Vanua Levu Island. A marine protected area is a place where fish, corals and other marine eco-systems are able to thrive without risk of being harmed or altered by man. Help restore the eco system through the following volunteer activities:
1. Reef surveying, 2. Fish identification, 3. Artificial reef construction enabling live coral to join and grow
LocationThe project is based in Savusavu, Vanua Levu, Fiji (locations vary according to schedule)
Accommodation and MealsDuring the village-stay, you will lodge with one of the local families. Some of these homes are really simple hut-like buildings that have no power or running water. Some others are basic concrete houses with running water; however, all this will add to your authentic Fiji experience, as you truly will be living in the same way as the local people. There will be around one to three people in each room.
All your meals will be included during this part of the programme. They will be made with local products, such as fish, root vegetables and rice.
Please Note: The village environment is very basic. There is a generator for electricity, but it is only available three hours a day.
