The projects principal aim is based around preventing the extinction of the Javan Gibbon and the Pileated Gibbon. By establishing a secure captive gene pool, the project is attempting to preserve this small South East Asian ape for fear that the species in the wild will fail.

This is the only facility in the world which is devoted entirely to the study of gibbons including the preservation and propagation of gibbons and educating the public about them.

Voluntary Work

As a ‘safe haven’ for the species, the centre is also designed to educate the public and help zoos and rescue centres to improve captive management and promote non-invasive behavioural studies.

The project is also intended to support field conservation project and protect the gibbons in their natural habitat. During your stay you will be involved in various types of volunteer work, the three main areas are Primate Keeper, Centre Assistant and Clerical Assistant

Daily activities will include:
  • Cleaning the enclosures
  • Preparing food & feeding the gibbons
  • Volunteers may also get the opportunity to help educate students (especially Anthropology and Biology students) through lecture tours.
We are looking for self-motivated volunteers with a love for animals. Further activities that volunteers may also get involved in include research, behavioural observations, fundraising, maintenance of the grounds and enclosures, medicating gibbons and filing.
