Orientation
Volunteers will get intensive, hands on, one-on-one training by an experienced volunteer for the first several days after you arrive. You will follow the trainer on feeding rounds to learn how things are done at the volunteer centre. You will also be given a full information pack about procedures used at the centre.
Gradually you will begin caring for the gibbons independently. You will eventually be responsible for feeding, water changing, cleaning enclosures, etc.
Accommodation and Meals
The project accommodation is located onsite. You will have a trailer to yourself, or to share with one other volunteer. Kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities are located in the house on the property. You will be taken shopping each week for groceries to provide for three meals daily included in the programme.
Free Time
You will have the opportunity to enjoy hiking, bicycling, bird watching and star gazing onsite. In the local area there is a variety of things to see and do. The project is located nine miles from Six Flags Amusement Park, which is always fun on your day off. You will also be located three miles from Santa Clarita, which can easily be reached by bus from the centre.
Santa Clarita is the fourth largest city in Los Angeles County located approximately one hour from Los Angeles. There is so much to see and do in this area of Southern California that you may want to rent a car on the weekend and see the sights of Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverley Hills, and Malibu, or just spend some time on the beach.
Project Age Limit
Minimum 18 years, maximum decided on potential participants’ health.
Project Support
Throughout your stay you will have the support and guidance of your local project coordinator and team. You will be provided with competent assistance and help with any questions or advice you may need during your stay. In addition you will have access to a 24 hour emergency contact number so you can contact one of our UK staff at any time should you need to.
