What, or who, exactly is a ‘grown up gapper'?!
There is no simple answer to this one! The ‘average' grown up gapper doesn't conveniently fit in to any standard stereotype. In our experience grown up gappers come from all walks of life and vary greatly in age, from thirty-somethings to more mature people who have already retired. If you were to identify one discerning characteristic about grown up gappers, however, it would be that that they have all retained a sense of adventure - and are not simply content to spend the rest of their lives only ever experiencing a once-a-year two-week package holiday.
A grown up gapper is someone who wants to experience ‘real' travel, see new places and broaden his or her horizons.

Grown up gapper - Career break professionals
Many of the grown up gappers who get in touch with us are professionals who want to take an extended break from work in order to ‘step off the treadmill' for a while and re-charge their batteries. This type of grown up gapper is often someone who has already taken a gap year following university and, ten years or so later, has got the ‘travel bug' to do it all over again. |

Grown up gapper - Kids have finally flown the nest!
An common type of grown up gapper is someone whose children have grown up and left home - meaning the parents now have far less responsibility and more of an opportunity to go and do things simply for themselves. This type of grown up gapper may well have seen their children go on a gap year and felt inspired to do the same thing when they heard about all of the exciting things they got up to. The average grown up gapper generally wants to have a good time and see new places before returning home to pick up where they left off - some use their career break travel to gain some new experiences before starting afresh when they get back. This type of grown up gapper could be someone who has been ‘stuck in a rut' doing the same old job for years and wants to take some ‘time out' in order to decide what they really want to do in life. |

Many grown up gappers are people who have retired and want to spend their time seeing the world and living life to the full. This type of grown up gapper definitely isn't content with spending the rest of their days enjoying the odd game of golf and watching ‘Countdown'! |

Grown up gapper - Singles, couples and groups
If you are a grown up gapper, it really doesn't matter if you are single, part of a couple or planning to travel in a group. Whatever your situation you're bound to meet other like-minded travellers. Fifty per cent or so of the grown up gappers who travel with GYFGU are single (and in our experience single people tend to meet other people more and quickly easily) so if you are a single grown up gapper you are in good company! |
