Nick's travel diary

The average Guatemalan family lives on less than $5 a day, stretching across as many as 8 children. Most homes are makeshift houses built of nothing more than cardboard and bamboo with dirt floors.

Voluntary work

As a volunteer you will be building homes for the most vulnerable families. The houses are built with a window, a lockable door and a toilet. They are then furnished with bunk beds and painted whatever the colour the family decides.

There are also opportunities to help in healthcare and education within these communities. In a short space of time your work will have a positive impact on the their lives of the communities that you are working alongside.

Location

The project is located in the surrounding areas of Antigua. The villages where you will be building are generally based between a 10 and 40-minute drive from accommodation.

Accommodation and meals

All volunteers will live with a typical Guatemalan family in Antigua or Jocotenango. You will have your own private room with a key to the main door for your own convenience. The bathrooms all have hot water and flushing western toilets, you may have to share a bathroom with fellow volunteers. You will be provided with 3 meals a day. Breakfast and dinner are provided by the host family and a packed lunch  is provided on site.

Language requirements

It is advisable that you learn some Spanish before traveling or taking part in volunteer work. This volunteer work can be easily combined with our Guatemala Language School which is suitable for complete beginners or those that want to develop existing language skills.
