Guatemala Spanish Language School

Trip code: GUSL
Spanish Language school, South America

Guatemala is a fantastic country to learn the language and travel. Where better to learn Spanish than the unique colonial town of Antigua.

What were the highlights of your trip?
I really enjoyed everything. Being in Antigua was lovely and then a really good contrast being in Flores.

Do you have 3 top tips for future travellers?
1. In Guatemala you can use the ATM machines safely. 2. Bottled water is freely available = no tummy upsets. 3. According to when you go to Guatemala and where you may not need malaria anaphylaxis - check with your Doctor.

Guatemala offers lots of variety, people are friendly, great experience.

The real highlight was the home-stay. The meals and service outstripped any hotel I have used on my trip!! What a variety and most were local dishes and plenty of it. The company was good fun. There is a comedy show waiting to be written about the household I stayed with. Spanish spoken 95% of the time. Secondly Antigua is in a spectacular position and it felt surreal on the walk to school to see the volcano looming up at the end of the street. The school, lessons and teacher were all very good. It sharpened my spoken Spanish up but it is hard work and tiring in individual lessons. But it worked!! Guatemala is a very colourful, fascinating, lively country and although it has its security problems in places you just have to use your commonsense when travelling and walking around town. Plenty of places to visit and too many markets for the health of my bank balance. For me Guatemala is Central America in a nutshell and I love those chicken buses!! My most memorable moment was finally seeing the temples at Tikal. It was a long, hot journey but worth it and the journey in the collectivo to the park with all the locals was good fun as I practised my Spanish. The greatest thing I gained from the experience was the confidence to open my mouth and speak Spanish without planning too much in advance!!

If you have been on this travel project, we'd love to hear from you!
