Guatemala Turtle Conservation Project
If you are looking for a career break by the ocean and have an interest in conservation then this project by the pacific needs you. The leatherback and Oliver Ridley turtle populations are under threat from over harvesting from local people, who rely on turtle meat and eggs as part of their diet.
This project also offers volunteers the opportunity to participate in the Caiman captive breeding programme, mangrove reforestations, educational activities in local schools and other community projects.
Voluntary WorkVolunteers will assist in:
- Conducting nightly patrol of beaches in search of nesting sea turtles
- Collect eggs and transfer them to the hatchery
- Record data and release turtles back to the wild.
Sea turtle project is only available during certain times of the year, according to breeding seasons. Contact us for more information.
LocationThe project is in Hawaii Park. It's located on a three-hectare reserve on our sea turtle, caiman and mangrove conservation project near the town of Hawaii on the Pacific coast of Guatemala. The beach is eight kilometers from the resort of Monterrico. The Hawaii ecosystem consists of mangrove-lined estuaries, dry tropical forests and volcanic sand beaches.
Accommodation & mealsThe Hawaii Park includes a large central rancho with kitchen, office/library, second-story dormitory, a large, open common area with hammocks and tables, and a western toilet and shower. There is also a small visitor's house where volunteers are welcomed to sleep.
The accommodation is rustic but comfortable. It's in a fantastic location and you will feel the ocean breeze and roar of the surf in the distance. It makes for the ideal atmosphere to relieve the stress of modern life and take in the wonders of the Pacific Ocean.
