Programme Details

The land of Israel has been a focal point for historic events that have influenced many individuals. Many nations have risen and fallen in ‘The Holy Land’ in the past, and was the foundation for the three monotheistic religions. These civilisations have presented numerous antiquities sites that hold many undiscovered secrets of the past.

Documented as one of the most densely crowded regions in the world for new sites of historic importance, Israel is a fascinating destination where relics are being discovered all the time, such as the unearthing of the 2,000 year old ‘Dead Sea Scrolls’.

Voluntary Work

During the project you will spend your time participating in archaeological digs as a member of an official archaeology team. The excavation sites that you will be working on will change regularly depending on which site is of more interest at the time.

As a volunteer, your responsibilities will include digging, sifting through the earth and recording and documenting your finds. Professors will be on hand at all times to offer expert insights into the finds. They will also be able to offer advanced tuition and training to those with particular special interest.

A typical day will start at 6.30am and finish at 2.30pm. You will be working five days a week and your days off will be Friday and Saturday.

Please note: Due to the nature of the archaeological excavations, volunteer work will involve some physical activities including digging and lifting. This work is very physically demanding, so please speak to a travel adviser if you have any doubts regarding your suitability for this programme.
