Desert Elephant Conservation, Namibia

Desert Elephant Conservation Namibia

Hi there,
I just thought I'd drop you a line after my little trip to Namibia.

Well what can I say? A real treasure of a place to go to!!! I cannot recommend this place enough to anyone. In fact I may not, and just keep it to myself.

I have travelled around a lot of countries, and can say Namibia is in my top three. In fact it beats second place!!!!
A wonderful experience and having been back nearly a week, I am really struggling to get back into the swing of things. I know most of us come down to earth with a bump, post holidays. I came down with a real crash and recovering in intensive care. Such a shame that it was for only a couple of weeks.

The other people on this venture were a mixed crowd (ages, backgrounds and nationalities) and I can say that all are wonderful people, and all of course with similar goals: The welfare of animals and to be able to understand these creatures in such a great country.
We were looked after and treated as friends the moment we arrived in Namibia from all people involved in this movement. I found all the people I came across friendly, helpful and always greeted you with a smile.

The organization run by Rachel and Johannes is a wonderful project looking after the need of both elephants and people. And I feel honoured to have met both persons and of course the elephants. To be involved in such a project was a real privilege. I am now a little more informed of the plight of these elephants and can understand why both Rachel and Johannes are so passionate about this project. In fact the passion has rubbed off a little and I will be revisiting within a year I hope!

I was very fortunate whilst out on a mission, to have located a herd of elephants, and upon closer inspection later that day, we were rewarded with a baby elephant of only 1 or 2 weeks old.

As a consequence I was tasked by Johannes to name this baby, and have given them the name of Frankie or Lizzy. At time of going to press it is unsure of whether this baby is male or female - hence the dual names!!

I can say that both parts of this experience I thoroughly enjoyed. I am not one for sitting by a beach and reading for hours, and the first week certainly was not that. The building of walls certainly made a difference from sitting at an office desk. The new skill attained may even give me a new career and would like to practice my new skills even more. Unfortunately my neighbour is not so compromising. Probably a blessing!!
Well I must go and dream of those starry nights by the camp fire.

I hope you enjoy a few photos I took whist out there.

Best regards
Jim Tunnicliffe
