25 miles south of Lusaka, near the banks of the Kafue River, the town is very close to the Kafue Flats and Lochinwar National Park, one the best birding centres in the world. With a population of 700,000 Kafue may be the centre of Zambia's heavy industry, but many of its inhabitants are still extremely poor. There are however some excellent craftsmen, including wood-carvers who mainly specialise in giraffes sculpted from single pieces of wood; these are a trademark of the region and well worth picking up.
Lochinwar National Park has more than 741 bird species, and offers phenomenal opportunities to see rare birds in a protected sanctuary.
