Voluntary Work
For years, the Kanjar people have struggled to integrate into society resulting in them becoming a community of their own. Your task will be to help develop and empower the Kanjars, therefore reducing their isolation and helping them to integrate into the surrounding society.
The Kanjar community needs to understand the importance of being treated as equals, where everyone in the community has access to education, health and hygiene facilities.
The programme also places an emphasis on educating outside communities about the need for social acceptance.
Volunteers will take part in a wide variety of activities. Here is a general outline of the main activities that you will be involved in:

Education based volunteer activities
- Activity based learning in schools for children aged 6-14 years
- Basic English lessons
- Organising and coordinating educational visits for children
- Health camps for children at school. Would also include maintaining health records, weight and height check, Doctor’s visit etc
- Restoration of inside and outside of schools e.g. painting of infrastructure, putting up shelves, and making fences
- Development of skills through skill development workshops based on singing, drawing, crafts, drama and role-play
- Teaching workshops for teachers and community members for creating new games, activities, songs, rhymes etc
- Conducting discussions with the children addressing issues such as health and hygiene, education and enrolment.
Community based activities
- Community meetings for introduction and confidence building. Including rapport building with community members through interaction and ice breaking sessions
- Organising regular surveys for updating data records regarding the number of households and family members
- Organising hygiene and health awareness programmes discussing: clean drinking water, cleanliness in household and nutritious diet
- Education awareness programmes to enrol children in schools. Providing information to parents regarding importance of education, benefits, progress of respective children and community
- Establishing a link between Gurukul schools and the community for increased parent involvement and participation
- Tree plantations and their maintenance
- Health Camps providing regular medical check ups
What’s Included in the Programme
- Pick up from New Delhi airport and first night at hotel in New Delhi on triple occupancy basis
- All transfers at the start and end of programme
a.Transfer from Delhi airport to hotel on arrival and vice versa on departure
b.Hotel to train station transfer in Delhi and vice versa
c.Train station to Camp transfers and vice versa by public transport
- Transfer from Delhi to Jhalawar by overnight trains in sleeper class, both ways
- All accommodation based on a maximum of 4 people per room
- Materials required for teaching and community based work
- Availability of an English-speaking co-ordinator whilst doing volunteer work and by telephone for handling any emergencies
- 24-hour support number and contact for emergencies
- Two-day orientation
- Television, board games, etc.
