An ultimate back-to-basics bush adventure with the breathtaking Mount Kilimanjaro as your backdrop. Working alongside the traditional Maasai tribes people, you’ll take part in vital conservation work for the African Elephant and big cat populations while experiencing the magnificent wildlife of Tsavo-West National Park on daily safaris.
Voluntary Work1) The African Big Cat Conservation Project An exciting and rewarding project aimed at securing the long-term future of Africa’s big cats. You’ll help to monitor their numbers through tracks and markings, gain an understanding of big cat behaviour and an appreciation of their natural environment while also learning how local communities can learn to live in harmony with these beautiful mammals.
During the two-week placement, you'll be involved in a range of activities, within the bush and amongst the natural wildlife of this untamed area.
- Animal numbers: This will involve direct and indirect animal count data collection. The direct counts will transect counts in pre-selected blocks and these blocks will represent areas of differing land-use patterns.
- Animal Diet: Data on the animals’ diet is collected through the observation of kills, flora destruction & examination scats or dung.
- Conflicts and Local Attitudes: Reports of big cat or elephant attacks will be investigated, recorded then compared to the reports made by Kenya Wildlife Services.
2) The Elephant and Wildlife Conservation Project During the two-week placement, you'll stay in our research camp and take part in the daily monitoring of elephant herd activity in the area.
- Elephant data collection with community game scouts: This involves identifying individual elephants through characteristics and markings and recording these findings
- Tracking and recording elephants and other wildlife species
- Counting and recording elephant numbers and their location using a GPS Navigation system
- Recording number & location of other large mammals
- 4x4 jeep safaris, observing the elephants from a close distance
