Kenya Medical and Community Volunteers

Trip code: KEMC
Kenya Medical and Community Volunteers

Kenya is one of Africa’s poorest countries and the population has been devastated by HIV/AIDS, poverty and unemployment. Volunteers have countless options to make a contribution to those affected.

Your Typical Itinerary

Please note that your itineraries may differ from this, depending on your own experience and the number of other volunteers on the placement at the same time. Please use this itinerary as an example only. Here is how a typical day in the life of a Volunteer might take shape:

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
07:00 Get ready for your project
07:30 Breakfast at Brackenhurst (your volunteer base in Limuru)
08:00 Drive to your project and start work at the hospital or orphanage
12:30 Lunch break. Either you will be picked up and taken to your volunteer house for lunch or alternatively you can spend your lunchtime at your placement
14:00 Return to your placement
17:00 Home time

Tuesdays and Thursdays
07:30 Get ready for your project and have breakfast
08:30 Leave for the slums in Nairobi. This is a long drive of 1-1.30hr
09:30 Help in the local clinic, schools or orphanages and home-based care
13.30 Break for a local lunch
14:30 Pick up - stop off at a shopping centre on the way home to do banking, internet and shopping

At home time you will be collected by your co-ordinator and taken back to the volunteer cottage. Here you can check your e-mails, watch TV, socialise or just relax and unwind in the beautiful gardens available. Evenings are very sociable affairs. Generally, volunteers discuss their days amongst each other whilst having supper together and prepare for their project the next day. You can enjoy sundowners overlooking the Rift Valley, amazing viewpoints just 20 minutes drive away.
