Voluntary Work

There are currently about 30 orphans being cared for by the orphanage all aged between eight months and 16 years old. The children need a lot of support, love and attention, which they currently don’t get due to a need for staff, so there is a great need for volunteer assistance. The majority of the children have been directly affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

You will be involved in activities such as the following during the day:

  • Teaching Sciences, English and Maths to older children
  • Giving lots of support and love to the children
  • Extra- curricular activities- sexual education or sports etc
  • Basic education for the young children
  • Playing games, having fun, interacting
  • Feeding the children
  • Helping them get dressed in the morning or ready for bed at night

Community Outreach
There is also the opportunity to work as part of an established, local Kenya Outreach programme for the most vulnerable families in the area. When you get to the project you will be able to organise with the co-ordinators what hours you would like to do as part of the Outreach team (on top of your 6 hours at the orphanage), so they can sort out transport for you to the Outreach sites. The outreach programme itself involves providing relief supplies to local poverty stricken families as well as working with special needs children.

You can mostly expect to be splitting your time between doing teaching in the orphanage school and caring for the children – this will be for about 6 hours a day.
