This project is based in and around the town of Kimilili in the West of Kenya and works in tandem with a current community project. Whilst the community programme particularly focuses on healthcare, food, clothing and education to the people in the area who are infected or are affected by HIV/AIDS, this project provides the opportunities for education and physical education that the majority of children would not receive otherwise. We believe that sports are a fundamental part of a child’s upbringing and is sadly lacking in areas of rural Kenya.
Kenya Kenya is possibly beyond the wildest dreams of your average wildlife lover or anthropologist – being home to the earliest evidence of man’s ancestry as well as the millions of migratory wildebeest and zebras that cross Kenya with their entourage of hungry predators. For the adventurous, Kenya takes the biscuit with opportunities to sleep out in the bush, visit the local Masaai and the chance to go on some of the best safaris in the world, by foot or vehicle.
If the promise of breathtaking wildlife parks, untouched beaches, flourishing coral reefs, the sight of elephants in front of Mount. Kilimanjaro and ancient Swahili cities doesn’t attract you to Kenya…nothing will.
Kenya is situated in Eastern Africa and shares borders with Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda and Sudan, with an eastern coast on the Indian Ocean. The country became ‘Kenya’, named for Mount Kenya (the nations tallest peak), in 1963 when it was granted independence by the British. Previously it was known as British East Africa. Kenya’s most famous and most popular attraction has to be the Masaai Mara National Park – named for the Masaai Tribe who inhabited the area and the River Mara that divides it – especially in July and August when the huge migration of wildebeests wind their way across the grass plains. A really exceptional sight!
The town of Kimilili is located in the Bungoma District in the west of Kenya. It is located close to the slopes of Mt.Elgon and the Kenyan-Ugandan border. The area is dedicated farmland, growing cash crops such as coffee, maize, beans, sunflower seeds and tea.
Climate Kenya enjoys a tropical climate but the different areas of the country have different weather with a hot and humid coast, a temperate inland and dry in the north. Kenya has a good amount of sunshine year round, with average annual temperatures ranging from 20ºC to 30ºC depending on whereabouts in the country you are. There are two rainy seasons, the big one occurring between April and June and another shorter one between October and December. Although pretty hot during the day, the temperature drops one the sun goes down, so you’ll need something a little warmer for the evenings.
