The bustling chaos of Zambia's capital city is a mix of the colonial, socialist and now democratic governments of the country, who have each influenced the style and economy of Lusaka. With 2 million diverse inhabitants this city has a tremendous energy, and its markets and thoroughfares are hives of activity, with lots of new shops springing up all over the place. Unconcerned by its 60% unemployment levels, new people move to Lusaka every day, and there are buzzing nightclubs and roadside shebeens all over the place.
With air links to Zambia's major tourist destinations from Lusaka airport, and plenty of attractions of its own, the city is a top destination. Visitors can experience the colour and lively atmosphere of the local markets, or visit the Lusaka National Museum, with its cultural displays and extensive art collection. Other day trips include the Munda Wanga Environmental Park, the tranquil Botanical Gardens, Kalimba Reptile Park with its snakes, crocodiles and chameleons, and the Kabwata Cultural Village, with some of the best hand-made crafts in the region. There is a water theme park nearby, as well as the Chaminuka Private Game reserve, just 45 minutes away from the city, which holds more species than any other game park in Zambia, with lion, cheetah, giraffe, elephant and ostrich.
