This programme allows volunteers to get involved in all aspects of medical care in community hospitals in underprivileged rural villages of Malawi. The project is located on the Southern shores of Lake Malawi at Monkey Bay. It is a small lake port with a sheltered harbour and the community hospital located there provides medical provision and aid to the surrounding community at the southern end of the lake.

This programme provides a great opportunity to really make a difference in one of the poorest countries in the world, where the average family income is less than 30 pence a day.

Voluntary Work

Free healthcare provision is provided by the Malawi government. Help is needed in a wide range of duties not only at the main community hospital, but also out in the field accompanying the mobile medical team on visits to rural villages and community clinics.

Volunteer duties include:

  • Assisting on a TB programme - screening cases, administering medication, follow-ups and checks
  • Working in children clinics for the under 5s – screening and weighing children, immunisation, monitoring growth and health checks
  • Food and nutrition programme – screening, health education and administering food supplements
  • Assisting with the Water and Sanitation programme
  • AIDS/HIV awareness programmes

This programme is ideal for volunteers that have medical backgrounds or may be considering a career in medicine. However, help is much needed also from those without medical experience.

Location

Located directly on the shores of the beautiful palm fringed beaches of Lake Malawi in a small harbour town called Monkey Bay.

Accommodation and Meals

Volunteers share a comfortable house, situated right on the beach of Lake Malawi with a large green garden. It is within walking/cycling distance to the community clinics and a short drive from the community hospital.

Volunteers will receive three meals a day. Breakfast and dinner is provided at the volunteer house and lunch will consist of a packed lunch which you can take with you to the hospital, or you may return to the house.
