Medical Volunteer Malawi

This programme allows volunteers to get involved in all aspects of medical care in underprivileged rural villages of Malawi. The project is located on the Southern shores of Lake Malawi at Monkey Bay; this is great opportunity to really make a difference in one of the poorest countries in the world, where the average family income is less than 30 pence a day.

Voluntary Work

This programme is ideal for volunteers that have medical backgrounds or may be considering a career in medicine. However, help is much needed also from those without medical experience and is therefore suitable for both qualified and non qualified volunteers.

Volunteer duties in numerous project areas include:

  • Assisting with putting together lessons on Home Based Care
  • Helping with malaria prevention techniques
  • Working in a Field Dressing Clinic
  • Volunteering in a local Orphan Care Centre
  • Increasing awareness of AIDS and HIV through various programmes
  • Assisting local mobile teams in Outreach Clinics
  • Providing support at a local community hospital and clinic

Please note: It is important to remain flexible in your attitude and work ethic and be prepared to help in any of the projects areas that are developing and use your initiative to develop new project areas with the advice of project staff. Please approach the programme with an open mind, positive attitude and strong work ethic in order to utilise your time best and in a way that leaves behind a lasting impression of your time and the volunteer project in Malawi. Itineraries and activities are subject to change.

What’s Included in the Programme

  • Project Fee: this entails financing that goes directly back into the project you are involved with. This project fee facilitates funding for items such as building materials, equipment, supplies, foodstuffs etc.
  • Airport transfers to and from Lilongwe International Airport
  • Orientation on arrival
  • All accommodation during your stay at shared volunteer house
  • Full support and assistance from your co-ordinator throughout your time in Malawi
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner each day
  • 24-hour support number and contact for emergencies

What’s Not Included in the Programme

  • Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement, which should include cover for repatriation
  • All flights
  • Private Airport Transfers if arriving outside of the specified dates, at the cost of US$175 in cash, per person, per transfer
  • Any extra nights of accommodation at the volunteer house: this costs US$25 per night
  • All items of a personal nature, such as curios, gifts, clothing (work and other)
  • E-mail/Internet and telephone calls
  • Public transport to and from the community hospital when necessary
  • Soft drinks, beer, wines and spirits
  • Visas
  • Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary in Malawi
